Rupe uses the upheavals occurring in the afterlife due to the replacement of the old ferryman with the new one (Julian Harper) to escape his banishment from the realm of the living. He also takes with him the brother murderer Cain, who is not allowed to enter the realm of the dead as a divine punishment for the murder of his brother Abel and has been trapped in the world between life and death ever since. He needs Cain as an energy source since Rupe’s existence in the realm of the living is limited to the lifespan of an old man, and only a blood sacrifice of the descendants of Adam and Eve can stop his mortal decay. Additionally, Rupe possesses supernatural powers—he can influence the mental balance of people. This ability, once transferred to Cain as a punishment, was meant to prevent him from ever being part of a human community again. What Cain experiences as a curse, Rupe sees as a gift that he readily uses against people.

Based on the biblical statement that anyone who kills Cain will suffer seven times the punishment, this threat is manifested in the existence of seven individuals who stand as a symbolic punishment and act as a kind of protective wall for the outcast. This is the foundation for the later formation of the Seven Dark Stars, led by Cain. But before that, it is Rupe who claims the position of the first Dark Star and sees Cain only as a subordinate who has to serve him. Thus, Cain—under the new identity of John Adams—is only the second Dark Star and ranks below Rupe. With the goal of increasing the group to seven members, Rupe sends John out to find people with star potential and awaken them using the dagger made from the remains of the stone that Cain once used to kill Abel. The first person John finds and later awakens is Rosa Winter. She becomes the third Dark Star and follows John on his mission to grow Rupe’s following. Winter, as unscrupulous and power-hungry as Rupe, submits to their common master even more than John and fully immerses herself in her role as a Dark Star. When Rupe reveals his true plan, it leads to a rift between him and John, as John is not willing to sacrifice himself for his master once all seven Dark Stars are found. Through a ritual, it will be possible for Rupe to shed his fragile shell. Angered that John has left him (thus threatening to exhaust his energy source soon), Rupe then plans to turn to John’s brother instead, to draw him to the side of the Dark Stars. Abel, living in the present under the identity of Paul Wedekind, is unaware of the plans that the master of evil has devised.
